An (-other) MXF explorer?!

MXF (Material eXchange Format) has been around for quite some time, and in fact has come a long way from the time that no one got its name correctly (MFX, XMF, etc) and interoperability issues were a hot topic, to become a well-established professional container widely used in the media production workflow.

2- But is MXF still a hot topic?

MXF files are created, ingested, edited everyday by different users, different tools, different equipment, all over the world, so MXF is definitely an important topic in media workflows. Interoperability is no longer a nightmare (or is it still?), but either you need to check the actual framerate or navigate through Partition Packs, Structural Metadata or Index Tables, there will be a time where you need a tool to explore the structure of MXF files you receive from vendors, or the actual MXF files your products are producing.

3- Why an (-other) MXF explorer?

At Mediagaps, we develop custom software solutions for media workflows. Our engineering team receives several MXF files that need to be analysed. With our mind set on simplicity and usability, we developed our own MXF tool, where the structure could be easily “read” and where we could dig into the complete structure of the MXF file, something that was not available in other tools in the market.

Based on the SMPTE standard 377M, the most colourful MXF tool, NAU, was released in 2018 and has now more than 150 users.

Allowing users to navigate through the structure of the MXF files without actually needing to get to its bits and bytes, NAU is the perfect MXF explorer both for MXF and non-MXF experts.

NAU has a free version available that can be downloaded at our webpage www.mediagaps.com
